Kelley's Dairy Links

I just added a new link and thought I would bring it to everyone's attention and then explain some of the other links here. I would like to introduce you to  "Welcome to the Old Sarge"
On second thought the other links do not really need re-explained but take a look at them and if there are some you haven't visited in some time take the time to visit now while you are thinking of it.

Kelley's Dairy on Missouri Proposition "A"

I believe the Prop "A" is a bad bill and should be soundly defeated.

 Vote no on Prop "A".

1.  I really have my doubts as to it raising as much "new" money for schools as they proponents claim. I mean really, 100 million in "new" income for schools?  That would mean that the citizens of Missouri that gamble would have to lose that much more than they are already losing to the casinos. Actually 100 times that much more because there would just be a 1 percent increase in the take for Missouri schools. So who would be getting the other 99 percent uptake?  Yep you are right - the casinos.

2.    Who is really behind the money that is buying the ads we are being bombarded with on TV saying it is such a fine deal for Missourians?  My best guess is the casinos.

3.    Who stands to gain the most from this bill?  The established casinos that are already in the state.  This bill would limit the number built to just those now built and those under construction.  Thirteen (13) in all I think..  That would certainly make their value go up greatly.  We are a "Free Enterprise" system and should not give any business that kind of protection from competition.  There are no Missouri casinos in the southwest section of the state and thus if this bill passes those of us in southwest  Missouri are forced to go to Oklahoma or travel north.

4.    How would raising the "loss limit' help Missourians?  It would not, very few of us or our neighbors can afford to lose $500 a day as it is.

5.    It would also do away with the "Don't play" list.  For those of you not familiar with the term, the "don't play" list is a list that you can enroll on if you know you have a gambling problem and the casinos cannot allow you to play.

Proposition "A" stinks any way you look at it.

Vote NO on Proposition "A"

This is just two of the 97 photos of the rally held yesterday, October 24, in Springfield, MO that are posted on the Springfield News-Leader website.  To view all 97 photos go to http://www.news-leader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=DO&Date=20081024&Category=NEWS01&ArtNo=810240804&Ref=PH&Params=Itemnr=1

Kelley's Dairy supports the McCain/Palin ticket and ask that you show your faith in America by voting for McCain for President in the November 4th Presidential election.  America needs this pair to lead us.  Both are smart and level headed and deserve our support.

Kelley's Dairy on John S. McCain

I feel John S. McCain is the best choice to be President of the United States and that is who I am supporting and who I am going to vote for.
I know the President really has no control over taxes, health care, energy policy or a host of other issues that are brought up for various reasons during a campaign but are really Congressional issues for Congress to do something about.
The only two things that the President really has any control over is FOREIGN POLICY and the nomination of Supreme Court Justices.  I feel that John S. McCain has a better handle on Foreign Policy than his main opponent and I know he will work at finding a nominee for the Supreme Court , if the need arises, that will better reflect the true interpretation of the United States Constitution.

Glinda's Outing

Glinda ventured outdoors yesterday for the first time since her knee surgery.  She walked to the barn with our grandson, Connor.  The photo shows her and Connor enjoying the beautiful fall day as I got to do the evening chores.
Glinda also rode to Mountain Grove  with me today, she didn't get out anywhere but she was restless from being home and just wanted to get out.

Study: Bottled Water as Polluted as Tap Water

Tests on leading brands of bottled water turned up a variety of contaminants often found in tap water, according to a study released Wednesday by an environmental advocacy group.

The findings challenge the popular impression — and marketing pitch — that bottled water is purer than tap water, the researchers say.

However, all the brands met federal health standards for drinking water. Two violated a California state standard, the study said.

An industry group branded the findings "alarmist." Joe Doss, president of the International Bottled Water Association, said the study is based on the faulty premise that a contaminant is a health concern "even if it does not exceed the established regulatory limit or no standard has been set."

The study's lab tests on 10 brands of bottled water detected 38 chemicals including bacteria, caffeine, the pain reliever acetaminophen, fertilizer, solvents, plastic-making chemicals and the radioactive element strontium. Though some probably came from tap water that some companies use for their bottled water, other contaminants probably leached from plastic bottles, the researchers said.

"In some cases, it appears bottled water is no less polluted than tap water and, at 1,900 times the cost, consumers should expect better," said Jane Houlihan, an environmental engineer who co-authored the study.

The two-year study was done by the Washington-based Environmental Working Group, an organization founded by scientists that advocates stricter regulation. It found the contaminants in bottled water purchased in nine states and Washington, D.C.

Researchers tested one batch for each of 10 brands. Eight did not have contaminants high enough to warrant further testing. But two brands did, so more tests were done and those revealed chlorine byproducts above California's standard, the group reported. The researchers identified those two brands as Sam's Choice sold by Wal-Mart and Acadia of Giant Food supermarkets.

In the Wal-Mart and Giant Food bottled water, the highest concentration of chlorine byproducts, known as trihalomethanes, was over 35 parts per billion. California's limit is 10 parts per billion or less, and the industry's International Bottled Water Association makes 10 its voluntary guideline. The federal limit is 80.

Wal-Mart said its own studies did not turn up illegal levels of contaminants. Giant Food officials released a statement asserting that Acadia meets all regulatory standards. Acadia is sold in the mid-Atlantic states, so it isn't held to California's standard. In most places, bottled water must meet roughly the same federal standards as tap water.

The researchers also said the Wal-Mart brand was five times California's limit for one particular chlorine byproduct, bromodichloromethane. The environmental group wants Wal-Mart to label its bottles in California with a warning because the chlorine-based contaminants have been linked with cancer. It has filed a notice of intent to sue.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Shannon Frederick said the company was "puzzled" by the findings because testing by suppliers and another lab had detected no "reportable amounts" of such contaminants. She said Wal-Mart would investigate further but defended the quality of its bottled water.

The researchers recommend that people worried about water contaminants drink tap water with a carbon filter.

Navy Days - A long time ago

The above photo is of myself (left)  and Larry Sisco, one of my shipmates on board the USS White Plains (AFS-4) around 1972. Judging from the background I would venture a guess that we are docked in Subic Bay, P.I.
The below photo is of Larry and his wife, Judy, at the Last Drop Inn and is a far more recent picture.

Kelleys Dairy Supports Hulshof for Governor

We support
 Kenny Hulshof
for
Governor
of the great
State of Missouri.

Read about his stand on the
 ISSUES.

Read
Hulshof proposes seniors and veterans' package

And visit his website to learn more about
 Kenny Hulshof

I have come to learn, as far as I can determine, that Kenny Hulshof was the only member of Congress from Missouri that voted against the "700 billion dollar bailout".  If for no other reason that is enough to vote for him as our next Governor.

Surprise Happening at Kelleys Dairy

Today was my 57th birthday.  My three great children surprised me with something I had wanted for a long time but just couldn't see spending the money to purchase.  Francis picked it up at S&H Tractor just east of Springfield and he and his family arrived here just at milk time.  Jacob was here with his family and Mitzi was outside with her flock and we were visiting while starting the evening chores.  Francis and Jacob went to install said surprise while Glinda and I started milking.  After a bit Francis and his family returned and said that he and Jacob could not decide where to install the device and I would have to make the final decision but that Jacob would return when I was through the milking and get it installed and working.  We finished the chores and I started figuring out where I wanted to put it.  I finally made a decision and started drilling the holes. After I had the bracket installed I called Jacob and he hurried over to finish the installation.  Below are a couple of photos of what I now have on my tractor. It was 8:00 p. m. and already dark before we were finished.  It sure gets dark earlier now.

In case you are wondering it is an AM/FM Radio with a cassette player.  should make the long days riding the tractor a little more pleasant.  Many thanks go out to Francis, Mitzi and Jacob and their families for this great surprise birthday gift.

Barn Repair at Kelleys Dairy

Yesterday my son, Jacob, came over to assist me in repairing the dairy barn roof.  I was down getting a tape measure when I snapped this photo of him on top of the barn.  Below is the same shot only cropped out to bring it closer.

Amazing what one can do with the photo editing software and a digital camera.
