Kelley's Dairy Hero

Thursday, July 24, 2008 was the 73rd birthday of one of my heroes.  Harold D. Kingsland , Senior  Chief Machinist Mate (ret) United States Navy.  Chief Kingsland spent twenty-one years serving his country and was stationed aboard the USS Maddox DD-731 deployed to the waters in South-East Asia when the Gulf of Tonkin Incident occurred.  Through him we know the truth of the matter, he says they were attacked and that now the 'historians' are trying to change the truth.
Chief Kingsland was surprised with a birthday cake just before Mtn Grove VFW Post 3770 started it's regular Thursday night bingo session.  The cake was prepared by his Granddaughter -in-law, Cakemaker, and represents the USS Maddox DD-731.
Here he is shown blowing out the one solitary candle that was placed on the cake.

Cakemaker does many cakes of different designs and is willing to tackle anything.  After the bingo session was concluded and the mess cleaned up the volunteers that work bingo for VFW Post 3770 sat down and each had a piece of cake to celebrate with the Chief.
Just a little over two months after the "Gulf of Tonkin Incident"  Chief Kingsland became my stepfather.  He has been an example, mentor, drinking buddy, fishing buddy, card partner, pool partner, supporter, and one of my heroes ever since.  I hope we get to celebrate a lot more of his birthdays.

I had a lot of fun making this cake. He's a wonderful Grandfather to me and to my children. I was honored to do it for him. It was a challenge for me as I know very little about these ships and I only had a small black and white photo to guide me.
